Short-Form vs. Long-Form Video: Choosing by Purpose
Vertical short videos and horizontal long videos are good at different things. The basic approach is to combine them with clear roles.
Strengths of each
- Short-form video (vertical): Short videos designed for viewing on smartphones. They catch attention quickly and suit raising awareness and sparking interest. Used on YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, TikTok and similar platforms.
- Long-form video (horizontal): Videos people watch carefully. Suited to explaining how a service works, behind-the-scenes stories and interviews, where understanding and trust matter. Used on YouTube and your own site.
How to combine them
Explain carefully in a long video, then cut parts of it into short videos to create more entry points. Conversely, guide people who became interested through a short video to the long video or your site. Making several videos from one shoot is also efficient.
A rule of thumb
- Want to be known first: short-form
- Want understanding and trust: long-form
- Want to reach a broad audience, as in recruiting or product introductions: combine both
